Surf Location Overview: Morocco

Morocco

Consistent swells. World famous right-hand points. Warm, sunny climate. Low living costs.

Ever since the early 70s, Morocco has tempted surfers from around the world with distant tales of long walling waves and relaxed, friendly people. Once a true underground classic enjoyed by just a handful of travellers, it has steadily gained popularity, and is now one of the most well-regarded winter surf destinations around. Its wealth of right-hand points break for hundreds of metres on end with almost mechanical precision. Add to this warm sunny days, low living costs and a unique culture, and you’ll understand why so many Europeans return year after year to surf this truly mesmerizing corner of Africa.

Regular foot, goofy foot, it doesn’t matter. If you like going right, Morocco’s where you should be heading. Its rugged coastline is home to a virtually endless supply of right-handers, none more famous than those in and around the village of Taghazoute. Its laid-back approach and winter swells make it almost instantly likeable, and with mind-blowing waves like Anchor Point, Boilers, Killer Point, Panorama’s and more, it’s easy to understand why many surfers find it hard to leave. But don’t be afraid to move away from this ‘comfort zone’, as from the beaches in the north all the way down to the desert south, wherever you venture on the Moroccan coast, you’ll never be far from the next quality break. Waves like Immessouane, Tifnite and Saharan South all command respect, and are just some of the many excellent spots that are all too often overlooked.

If you’re thinking of heading to Morocco, the best times to go are between autumn and early spring. Although its beautiful shores receive waves all year round, your chances of properly scoring it in the summer won’t be helped by a mix of onshore winds and smaller swells. Time your trip right though, and you’ll be rewarded with long, green, walling waves that can break for weeks on end. In fact, the waves can be so consistent during the peak winter swell season, many two week holidays soon turn into stays of months on end. But whenever you choose to go, and wherever you choose to surf, Morocco promises to be an experience you will never forget.

Go on - find yourself somewhere to stay, and get out there!
