World-class waves. Huge variety of surfing options. Breathtaking scenery. Sangria. Parties to die for!
With live web feeds during ASP events and stories of 20 second barrels ridden by a certain Mr. Slater, it's no surprise that Mundaka continues to dominate the headlines in Spanish surfing. Its never-ending sandbank produces super fast, hollow left-handers, and at times breaks with the ferocity and conviction of a Hawaiian reef. Yet despite the draw from Europe’s favourite wave, the rest of Spain continues to be overlooked on the majority of surf trips. As a result, its massive variety of breaks and their crystal clear waters are left largely to the locals, plus a handful of surf-savvy travellers.
No matter what type of surf trip you’re looking for, the chances are Spain will have it covered. Not only does it pick up more swell than any of its neighbours, but it has such an incredible coastline, that on any given day you’ll find waves. From sucky beach breaks and powerful reefs to some of the best rivermouth walls to be found in the world, Spain delivers in a big way. Places like Meñakoz, Roca Puta, Rodiles, Liencres, El Brusco and Pantín are renowned for their quality, and on their day can be truly mind-blowing. But these are just some of the many spots on offer, with plenty more less publicized breaks serving up decent waves on a daily basis.
There isn’t a best time to visit Spain, as it depends entirely upon what’s on your agenda. If ‘socialising’ plays an important role in your trip, then summer could be the way forward – with the legendary ‘running of the bulls’ in Pamplona, non-stop parties in San Sebastián, and festivals nearly every weekend. But if you’re looking to score perfect waves without the crowds, then autumn and spring are the times to go. In autumn the water is still nice and warm, the swells consistent and there are enough people around to make all-night fiestas more than just a possibility. Spring on the other hand is all about the waves – and if you read the conditions right, you could be rewarded beyond your wildest dreams.
