Surf Location Overview: France

France

World-class beach breaks. Long summer days. Good nightlife. Topless beaches. Excellent food and wine.

Already the world's #1 tourist destination, France has rapidly become an essential visit for travelling surfers across the globe. Its healthy blend of powerful beach breaks, crazy bars and pain au chocolat, has made it a favourite tour stop for many of the top pros. Needless to say many others find that same mix pretty appealing too, and every year hundreds of surfers descend upon the beaches of western France - looking to score some glassy barrels, hang out with friends and have the time of their lives!

It was the perfect sandbanks at Lacanau and Biarritz, coupled with Guéthary’s solid rights that first put France on the surfing map. But nowadays, the beach towns of Hossegor, Capbreton and Anglet seem to be more en vogue. Famous for their summer parties and beautiful beaches, these three towns are home to some of the best beach breaks in the world. On their day, places like La Gravière, Les Culs Nuls, La Piste and Les Cavaliers can be truly world-class, and each one has the potential to give you the best barrel of your life. But although the south-west tends to steal the headlines, the rest of the country has some classic waves too. The central coast has some great beach breaks and reefs, including La Sauzaie, Bud-Bud, Sauveterre and more. Head further north, and you’ll find places like Baie des Trépassés, La Torche and Kaolin – quality breaks that deliver in a big way.

A trip to France is a must for anyone who surfs. Visions of long sandy beaches, hollow green waves and blurry nights are etched into the memories of many surfers, plenty of whom return each year to relive the good times. Summer is a great season to visit if you’re looking for sunshine, nightlife and some waves thrown in too. But if serious tube time is what you’re looking for, autumn and spring are the times to go. Autumn is the warmer of the two, spring the quieter – but one thing these seasons do have in common is the quality and consistency of the waves on offer. Once fun little summer beach breaks soon jump in size, serving up barrel after barrel to anyone lucky enough to be there. A winter trip to France can be great too – base yourself in the north-west and you’ll find quality reefs and beach breaks working whatever the wind direction.

Go on - find yourself somewhere to stay, and get out there!
